You may remember that, in March 2025, Alba Gaughan, an assistant phlebotomist at Edgware Kidney Care Centre, became the first recipient of the inaugural David Myers Award for Excellence in Kidney Care, after being nominated by her patients.
The Award was established to recognise Royal Free staff who go above and beyond, providing excellence in kidney care.
Has one of our administrators, dietitians, doctors, health care assistants, nurses, occupational therapists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, psychologists, renal technicians (or anyone else in the team!) provided excellent care to you?
Please can all Royal Free kidney patients now start thinking about who they may like to nominate for the Award in 2026.
The idea to create the Award came from Martha Myers (pictured with Alba), the widow of David Myers BEM.
David, who died in 2024 spent more than 30 years as a renal patient of the Royal Free Hospital (RFH). He campaigned tirelessly on behalf of RFL patients, helping to lead the charge locally to raise awareness of organ donation, especially among ethnic minority groups.
Going forward the Award is to be presented annually to a member of staff from the RFL renal service who goes above and beyond. The award is displayed in the RFH’s renal unit.
More details will provided later on the nomination process for 2026 and the arrangements for its presentation.
